Will you go to jail if you owe tax?

Just owing the Internal Revenue Service money because you cannot pay your taxes is not a criminal offense that you go to jail for. Of course, if you owe a large amount of tax because the IRS finds underreporting or some other impropriety, you could go to jail. However, in most cases if you can't pay your taxes and you file your tax return on time, the IRS will accept payments if you can show there is a good reason.
